In the artist’s words…
Lou Bermingham (http://www.loubermingham.com)
I grew up in the Sierra Foothills and moved to San Jose to attend SJSU. I have lived in San Jose and Los Gatos for years and recently moved to Capitola. I teach Art at Independence High School, East Side San Jose, and my art studio is in an industrial warehouse in Campbell.
I paint in a gestural way, usually in acrylics or oils. I’m trying to capture the hidden, the mysterious in our world and bring it into the light. Using various colors, shapes and textures, I’m attempting to create from a place that is still forming – fresh and raw – and coming into being.
The nine pieces (all symbolic abstract art/acrylic on canvas) include: “Osiris”, “She’s Still There”, “Iris’ Rainbow”, “Burn on Through”, “Mano a Mano”, “Perfect Curvature of the Earth”, “Kokoro”, “Demeter’s Moon” and “Zoom”.
The shapes, symbols, and totemic animals that I paint I’ve observed in nature while exploring caves, hiking and dreaming – which is why remembering my dreams is so important to me. These are combined with colors and textures and create, I believe, a transfer of energy into the light, space and environment we all inhabit. I believe Art – whether visual, performing, musical or other – is a vital energy needed for re-balancing ourselves and our world.

As a Sculptor, I have chosen to focus on the human figure since the mid-1990s. I create one-of-a-kind sculptures… and in the case of certain small pieces, editions of 4. My bronze sculptures include heads, figures and fragments, and reflect a personal perspective on being human. At the same time, they deal with the life experience of men and women of diverse cultures, ages and backgrounds – particularly with respect to relationships and with an emphasis on women’s experience. There are 6 pieces in the show at Gallery 85. They are titled “Being and Becoming”, “Deep Thought”,” New Beginning”,’ Labyrinth of time”, “Reaching”, and “Walking Meditation”. My work is represented by Sandra Lee Gallery, 251 Post St. Suite 310, San Francisco, CA and the Morris Graves Museum in Eureka, CA
She teaches at Mission College and the Triton Museum.
Cuong Nguyen (http://icuong.com)
I’m an Artist/Art instructor from San Jose, California. I consider my style to be contemporary realism. I use Pastel, Conte pencil and Oil for my paintings. I will have five pieces on display: “Her” (Portrait, Oil on canvas), “Preoccupied” (Figurative, Oil on canvas), “Jasmine” (Portrait, Pastel), “Waiting” (Figurative, Conte), “Pure” (Portrait, Conte).
My paintings depend on the dramatic portrayal of light, shadow and environment to create their mood and sense of realism. I supplement the meaning visible in human faces with a combination of symbolic imagery or just simple objects. My goal is provide a different aspect of my model’s personal life, whether it be someone I’ve known for a long time or someone I just met.
He teaches at the Triton Museum and holds workshops in Mexico and at his studio.
